📰 Latest Developments
Regulators kill the Adobe Figma deal. If you've ever had to pay a termination fee for a mobile contract or gym, then you'll understand Adobe's current pain. The only difference? Adobe had to pay $1B to pull out of their $20B deal. As I recently wrote, and despite the mega cancellation fee, this might suit Adobe, who can now pivot towards investing more heavily in incorporating GenAI into their design tools. The fact that Adobe pulled the plug on the acquisition is another win for regulators, who are increasingly active in clamping down on anti-competitive behavior amongst Big Tech. It's also a big win for the European Martech industry. There is still a real risk that overregulation leads to Europe being left behind - particularly in terms of innovation and AI - but in this instance, Adobe decided that without Europe, buying Figma wasn't worth it. The EU clearly has the desire to regulate more forcefully; they might just have the scale and significance to make an impact beyond their own borders, too. Link
